HD tidbits from '72

[In 1972, the investment of AMF is prelavent in the significant increase in production. Total numbers of the 'Main models' in '70 was 16,669, in '71 it was 22,650. Now in '72 - 34,750 bikes. That's a significant increase, boys and girls.].

BIG for 1972, the Sportster engine is 'supersized'!
61ci =1000cc.
Compression ratio of 9:1, 61 bhp, Bendix/Zenith carbs, [BTW, Zenith made very reliable computers in the upcoming years], 4 speed, triplex primary chain, F&R drum brakes, coil/points ignition, steel double down tube frame, 58.5" wheelbase, 530 lbs, 3.7 gallon tank, 3 qts oil, 116 mph, $2,120 for the XLH.

Main Models, (production #):

XLH - 1000cc, (7,500) 'Sportster Super H'
XLCH - 1000cc, (10,650) 'Sportster Super CH'

(FL series = 1,600; FLH series = 8,100) - Electra Glides Super Sport
FLHF - 74ci, foot shifted 4 speed
FLH - 74ci, hand shifted 4 speed
FLPF - 74ci, foot shifted 4 speed
FLP - 74ci, hand shifted 4 speed

FX: - 74ci, foot shifted 4 speed, (6,500) 'Super Glide'

GE Servi-car - 45ci flathead, 3 forward speed, 1 reverse, (400).

Paint: birch white or sparkling blue.

XL changes:
Engine bore increased to 3.18", bumping displacement to 1,000cc.
Oil tank placed near chain, seat is thinner w/less padding. [looks like
the 'King Cobra' seat].

FX:
Sportster style rear fender, scalloped dual seat, oil pump updated w/new
drive gears, rectangular "AMF Harley Davidson" tank badge.

FL:
Rectangular "AMF Harley Davidson" tank badge, plastice switch housings for handlebars.

Racing notes:
Grand National - 1st place, Mark Brelsford. [He scored 1,483 points].
[Rayborn puts on awesome showings in Easter Match Races. He returned to England with the new alloy XR750, {and this time, full factory support}].

Triumph, BSA and Yamaha, were other significant contenders.
1973 would be filled with accidents and injuries for HD racers.
