FLHP (282)
FLHP (317) 'Police' [There were 2 models. Don't know the
differences]
FLHP (270) 'Deluxe'
FLHP (19) 'Shrine'
[All the different FLHP models are not well explained in
my books.
Insight appreciated].
Specialty Models: 25 years for Sportster.
Each with special history paperwork signed by Beals, Thompson
and Willie G., and anniversary graphics.
XLHA Aniversary Sportster - (932)
XLSA Aniversary Roadster - (778)
Paint: birch white, vivid black, classic
tan, classic creme, metallic
blue, light red, dark carmine, orange, brown, emerald green,
red,
pewter, maroon.
XLH & XLS changes: lighter frame, oil
tank repositioned, thicker head
gasket w/lower 8:1 compression, (emissions control), larger
rear disc,
(XLS also repositioned the battery).
80ci models: revised valves and valve springs.
FX models: plastic switch housing, [personally,
YUK].
FXB: higher bars, gold cast wheels. This
is also the last year for the
FXB.
[Drum roll please], enter the:
*^* FXR: New style, [and damn nice], frame,(welding reminisent
of '51 on these and the sportsters. It was lighter than
the stripped FLT, but
stiffer), rubber mount, (aka Elastomer-[funny name for rubber,
huh?]),
electronic tach, ignition switch placed under the gas, [left
side], 5.5"
headlight w/43,000 candlepower halogen,[and "they" STILL
can't see ya
coming], 605lbs, oil consumption control package,[lets it
leak if it
gets over a certain level], 4.2 gallon, 19"-f/ 16"-r,
dual 10" f disc
brakes, push button turn signals, [I just nudge the 'ol lady',
and she
extends the appropriate hand signal], wire wheels, single
color paint:
[Cymbal crash], also enter:
FXRS, [hey, this is the ancestor to my bike, I'll celebrate
if I want
too].
The same features as the FXR except: polished
covers,[proud to be a
posser], small sissy bar, stepped seat, highway pegs, contrasting
tank
panels and nine spoke cast wheels option,[ok, so it aint
perfect].
FLT: lowered floor boards, new style handlebars
and seat,[I dont have
specs on what "new" means. Specifics on these from
the NG would be
appreciated], improved seals on saddlebags, locks for top
box &
saddlebags, new primary chain oiler, higher output alternator.
MoFoCo minutes:
- first year application of MAN, (materials as needed), [also
known
present day as JIT, 'just in time' manufacturing], first
year of custom
paint program, HD petitions International Trade Commission
for tarrifs
on Japanese moto-sicles, [and gets it], (British bikes not
included, as
there market was very slim) - Reagan imposes 5 year tarrif
on 700cc or
larger, (45%-deee-amm). Layoffs = 1,600 out of 3,800 employees,
and
management has a salary freeze. 5/82, 100 rider protest ride
to Madison
in reponse to Wisconsin police using Kaw's. Advertising budget
= $3
million.
Racing Notes: Grand National-Ricky Graham
takes 1st, Jay Springsteen
takes 2nd, Randy Goss takes third. Ricky also wins Winston
Pro Series,
and Jay wins 32 national races.
Also occuring in '82, effects of oil price
hike are being felt,
worldwide inflation causes interest rates to soar, Japanesse
bikes are
stocked to the rafters in the US, and are not subject to
tarrifs. A
month long plant shutdown occured due to lack of sales.
Other tidbits, British models had all black
tack and speedo.
The Superglide II had shorter shift linkage for more 'responsive'
gear
changes. FLT & FXR seat height = 29". Redesigned
brake and clutch levers helped to improve leverage. The FXR(S)
frame was a more massive backbone and larger diameter frame
tubing. The XL oil tank and the FXR triangular tube cover,
are practically indistinguishable, [from a distance anyway].
***tidbits taken from various sources.
