HD tidbits from '87
The sportster hit it's 30th birthday. [And
since HD never lets a chance go by to celebrate], we will
see anniversary models. Plus the Sportster got more chrome
and a black engine paint job. [Put on the party clothes, the
Sporty got special orange and black paint too].
*^* New Model Sportster; To go with the anniversary
Sportster edition, also came a lowered 883. The fork tubes
were shortened 2", revised shock angle, a softer seat
at 26.75", (1.75" lower than standard), and called it
the 'Hugger'. This model was aimed at women and men who
didn't use as much fabric along the inseam.
*^* New Model,[sorta], FXLR Low Rider Custom:
With the FXR popularity, it was time for another. HD combined
the FXR with the chopper look of the FX. They used a solid
rear wheel, 21" front wheel, an XR1000 front fender,
and a small XL type headlight, speedo mounted between bars,
one filler tank and no center console, 2 piece high handlebars
w/2 cross-braces, black cylinders and crankcases w/chrome rocker/gearcase/primary
covers, highway pegs, belt final, single rear/front brakes.
The Low Rider originally appeared 10 years before, but became
'Low Glide' up through '85, then 'Low Rider' again in '86,
(still FXRS), [also interesting, they had the Low Glide Custom
last year]. Now just because there may not be enough Low
Riders, they also have a FXRS Low Rider Sport Edition for
this year. So in celebration, [HD gotta party, lotta loooowwwww
riders], the FXLR has even more flavors in both the 'Custom
Anniversary Edition' with anniversary graphics on both fenders and
the tank; as well as in the form of the 'Anniversary Low
Rider' with a 10th Anniversary leather center tank strap.
There was also an FXRC Special thrown in there to make damn
sure you had an FXR to chose from, (736 produced). [Got it,...................................good].
[Oh, and the FXWG is now gone. The Softail
pretty much replaced it. Which also means that there are
now no more 4 speeds in the FX series.]
Now the FL series is not confusing at all,
[much]. The term 'Classic Tour Glide would represent both
the FLHTC and some FLHTC, and other FLHTC's are now called
Electra Glide Classic, while last year, we had Classic
Electra Glide. [This may be because some of the FL models
were being stripped of some extra's to help lighten the
load, (as it where), but this is purely speculation on
my part.].
