Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns @ Clearlake:
LOUIE of the Week

Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns @ Clearlake – LOUIE of the Week - October 2nd, 2012

This week, the LOUIE LOUIE spotlight returns to Mike Wilhem and the Hired Guns, who graced this webpage with a version a year and a half ago.

This particular version has a really cool video produced my new friend Edward Chatham, who shot this clip in Clear Lake, California, just north of San Francisco.

Mike Wilhelm, who was a founding member of the Charlatans, that later joined the Flamin’ Groovies, and also led Loose Gravel, was recently inducted into the American Heritage International Blues Hall of Fame at a ceremony a few months ago. Ed provided a summary of the band on the YouTube posting..

In addition to Blues Hall of Fame inductee, guitarist/vocalist Wilhelm, three-time Grammy-winning woodwind virtuoso Paul McCandless on saxes and flute and outstanding Bay Area gutbucket blues singer and guitarist Rev. Rabia will be joining the band. Rounding out the aggregation are Gary Bouley on guitar, Jamie Webber on bass and Colin Holmes on drums.

BAY AREA - Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns play R & B and Jump Blues for Maria's Dining & Dancing at Presidio Yacht Club, Ft. Baker, Sausalito on Thursday, May 3 and Blues Monday at the Blue Wing Saloon, Upper Lake on Monday, May 7.

Maria's Dine & Dance is a regular Thursday feature at Presidio Yacht Club. Dinner serves starting at 5 pm and the band plays for dancing from 7 until 10 pm. Dinner is priced at $8 and a $5 cover donation is requested for the band starting at 6:45. Yacht Club members pay no cover.

Blues Mondays are a regular Monday feature at the Blue Wing Saloon & Cafe. The band plays from 6:30 until 10 pm.

Guitarist/vocalist Wilhelm is a recent inductee into the American Heritage International Foundation Blues Hall of Fame. Bassist Jamie Webber came up in Chicago, playing with Earl Hooker. More recently he was the longtime bassist for rock, blues and country legend Lonnie Mack. Sticks the Drummer is a recent arrival in Lake Co. and is the most recent member to join. He stays in the pocket with Webber at all times. Another recent addition is lead guitarist Gary Bouley, an extremely fluent player who lends yet more nuances to Wilhelm's already evocative blues. Rounding out the band is tenor saxophonist Dave Gower whose solos draw applause from audiences and band members alike and whom Wilhelm describes as "...the style of player I've been looking for, a real find." The Presidio Yacht Club show will very likely also find some Bay Area luminaries sitting in.

Presidio Yacht Club is located in Travis Marina in Ft. Baker at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge. The view of the bridge is both spectacular and unique. Further information and directions are at www.presidioyachtclub.org.

Bo Diddley Medley - Mike Wilhelm

Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns

Thursday, April 5th, 2012, Presidio Yacht Club, Ft. Baker, Sausalito, CA, 7-10 PM

We are now set with the band personnel for Thursday, April 5th at the Presidio Yacht Club aka Travis Marina, Ft. Baker, Sausalito, CA.

http://www.facebook.com/events/305193876194791/

Mike Wilhelm - lead vocal, guitar, leader; Gary Bouley - guitar; Jamie Webber - bass; Sticks the Drummer - drums; Dave Gower - alto sax, tenor sax. We will also be welcoming our very special guest, virtuoso trombonist Ed Early. Ed has had a long career in music and plays in the Ed Early Band and the Elvin Bishop Band. He led Albert King's horn section for years and his many credits are far too numerous to mention. I only met him very recently and he jammed with me on a couple of tunes, uncorking some beautiful solos, at a memorial jam for our mutual friend Terry Dolan. I'm both flattered and delighted that he accepted the invitation to come out and jam with us. We will also be welcoming other special guests TBA.

I am counting on my Bay Area fans to turn out for this one. Presidio Yacht Club is the hippest venue and possibly the best kept secret in the Bay Area, with a full bar and the best view of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Golden Gate and San Francisco I've ever seen. Maria will be cooking a chicken cobbler with biscuits dinner, starts serving at 5 PM, $8. $5 donation for the band requested from 6:45 PM on. Band plays for dancing from 7 - 10 PM. Presidio Yacht Club members gratis. If you can't afford a total of $13 for dinner and dancing to a live band, then God bless you we will comp you! This is the biggest no-brainer in the history of mankind!

Happy trails, Mike Wilhelm

Blues Hall of Fame inductee debuts new band

By Alex Johns

SAUSALITO - Recent Blues Hall of Fame inductee Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns play Maria's Dinner & Dancing at the Presidio Yacht Club at Travis Marina on Thursday, April 5. Hostess Maria Perrin will prepare her delicious chicken cobbler and biscuits dinner which starts serving at 5 pm for $8. The band will play for dancing from 7 until 10 pm. A $5 donation is requested for the musicians.

Wilhelm is debuting a new lineup of Hired Guns and is very enthusiastic about his new crew. "For the first time in many years I've got a band made up of full time professionals who don't have day jobs. It's a real gas to finally have really great players that are free to rehearse, free to gig and free to travel. I'm also stoked that we're playing Presidio Yacht Club for our first gig in the new configuration. This has to be one of the hippest venues in the Bay Area and one of its best kept secrets. The place is unique, right on the water, it's got a full bar and the best view of the Golden Gate Bridge I've ever seen. And where else can you have dinner and dance to a live band for a total price of only 13 bucks? It's a no brainer!"

Personnel for the latest iteration of Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns are as follows: from Kelseyville, leader, guitarist and vocalist Wilhelm; from Willetts, guitarist Gary Bouley and alto and tenor saxophonist Dave Gower; from Fort Bragg, bassist Jamie Webber, formerly with Lonnie Mack; from Kono Tayee, Sticks the Drummer; and last but far from least, their special guest, Bay Area trombonist Ed Earley. Blues virtuoso Earley has had a long and distinguished career in music and plays in the Ed Earley Band and the Elvin Bishop Band. He led Albert King's horn section for many years. His credits are far too numerous to mention here but a quick internet search will provide his biography. Wilhelm will also be welcoming other special guests TBA.

The Louie Report: the blog for all things LOUIE LOUIE

Today is INTERNATIONAL LOUIE LOUIE DAY, and in about 14 hours from now, I'll be on the radio yacking about that song, sharing some tasty LOUIE nuggets from the archives, and unveiling some special recordings that have never been broadcast.

As I try to share a special LOUIE each week on this blog, today I'm honored to unveil a brand new version of the song by my friend Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns.

Louie, Louie - Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns

Born in Los Angeles in 1942, Mike Wilhelm learned blues guitar in his teens from legendary Tennessee bluesman Brownie McGhee and Texas songster Mance Lipscomb. A U. S. Navy veteran, he is perhaps best known as one of the founding members of San Francisco's first psychedelic rock group, the Charlatans (1964-69). He led his own hard rock group, Loose Gravel, from 1969 until 1976 when he joined cult heroes and power pop originators the Flamin' Groovies, playing with them until 1982.

Thank you Mike, for allowing me to among the first to hear this new version of LOUIE LOUIE. Now, it's time to share it with the rest of the world! - ENJOY!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: By H. C. Anderson

UPPER LAKE – Dubbing the band Hired Guns, Mike Wilhelm has assembled one of the heaviest lineups of veteran musicians ever heard at the Blue Wing Saloon & Cafe's Blue Monday series of dinner dance/concerts. The personnel are Mike "the Charlatan" Wilhelm, guitar/vocal; Barry "the Fish" Melton, guitar/vocal; John "Electric Flag" Beckwith, bass/vocal; Mark "Street Dog" Phillips, drums/vocal; James "Jimmy the Lion" Leonardis, tenor sax; plus special guests.

A virtuoso delta slide guitarist and fingerstyle blues player, Cold War era Navy veteran
Mike Wilhelm is known as a founding member of the Charlatans, the first San Francisco ‘60s psychedelic rock group. The Charlatans were invited to play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, OH in 1997. During the late ‘70s/early ‘80s he was lead guitarist with the cult heroes Flamin' Groovies who are considered by rock historians to be the fathers of Power Pop.

Barry Melton was the fiery lead guitarist in the ‘60s group Country Joe and the Fish who jumped into national prominence with their appearance in the film Woodstock. Since then he has toured under his own name in the U.S. and internationally. Somehow he also found the time to study law by correspondence course, pass the bar and practice law. Melton quips, "I'm an alumnus of Matchbook U." He recently retired as Yolo County Public Defender.

John Beckwith has played with Nick Gravenites and Electric Flag for the last 12 years and is considered by both musicians and critics to be one of the finest blues bassists on the scene today.

A native of London and a Gulf War U. S. Navy veteran, Mark Phillips was drummer with the Grateful Dead cover band Street Dogs as well as being an in-demand Bay Area recording session drummer. He is known as a "one take" player and is more than comfortable in the blues genre. He has played with Wilhelm's Bottle Rock band for more than a year.

Local organic farmer
James Leonardis is also a talented jazz tenor saxophonist with a gorgeous tone whose solos always draw appreciative applause. Though he hasn't had a lot of experience playing Rhythm & Blues he seemed to fit right in with Wilhelm's Bottle Rock Blues & Rhythm Band when they last played the Blue Wing.

The band plays the Blue Wing from 6:30 until 9:00 Monday evening. The Blue Wing is located at 9520 Main St., Upper Lake. Reservations are recommended for parties of six or more. The telephone number is (707) 275-2233. Wilhelm's new lineup at the Blue Wing

By Alex Johns

UPPER LAKE - Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns' new five-piece lineup will play the Blue Wing on Monday, March 14, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Former Hired Guns bassist Randy Hare has switched to guitar with the addition of veteran bassist Jamie Webber. An Arkansas native, Webber grew up in Chicago which has infused his playing with a sensibility uniquely suited to Wilhelm's rootsy blues material. Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns at the Fair Saturday

By Alex Johns

LAKEPORT - International recording artist and Lake County resident Mike Wilhelm will take the stage at the Lake County Fair on Saturday, September 3 with his five-piece band Hired Guns. Performance times are 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00 pm.

Asked to estimate the number of dates he has played the 69 year old fingerstyle guitarist replied with a chuckle, "I lost count at around 3500 thirty or forty years ago."

Wilhelm was more forthcoming when asked about well-known names he has played with. "I've shared stages and/or jammed with Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry, the Chambers Brothers, Sons of Champlin, Buddy Guy, The Police, Rockpile, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop, Danny Kalb, Steppenwolf, Janis Joplin & Big Brother, Janis & Full Tilt Boogie, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Greg Elmore, John Cipollina, Pete Sears, Mark Naftalin, John Mayall, Nicky Hopkins, Grateful Dead, Country Joe & the Fish, Barry Melton, Nick Gravenites, Troyce Key & JJ Malone, Monica Dupont, Mitch Rider, John Kay, 13th Floor Elevators, the Explosives, the Plimsouls, Peter Case, Iggy Pop, Velvet Underground, Colin Linden, Greg Douglas, Erik Frandsen, Steve Mann, Glen Campbell, Dick Rosmini, Fred Gerlach, Ry Cooder, Taj Majal, John Hammond, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner, Romel Amado, dr kyOn, Yotchan...those last three in Japan, two are major stars there. Some of those names are not household words but they are all highly talented musicians, well known amongst their peers. There are so many that I can't bring them all to mind at the moment."

He went on with obvious pride, "Interesting thing, I did an internet search a couple of weeks ago to find out about the availability of my past recordings. I found that every studio recording I've ever been on going back to 1965 is still in print on CDs. I don't think there are many artists who can make that claim. My fan base is worldwide. While I may not have had any big hit records my place as an international recording artist is assured." He says that his royalty statements for the Charlatans, the Flamin' Groovies and solo albums show sales in Albania, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, England, Finland, France, Holland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Norway, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and the United States.

He is effusively enthusiastic about his current band which now includes bassist James Webber. "Jamie toured for years with Lonnie Mack up until Lonnie's retirement. I didn't pick him as a bass player, he picked me. He commutes all the way from Ft. Bragg to rehearse with me and my band which I really appreciate. My former bass man Randy Hare is now on guitar and that is a good thing 'cause he has really got the guitar chops goin' on. He can more than hold his own in any bag be it blues, rock, jazz, fusion...you name it. I am honored to have him in my band. Slammin' Scott Slagle is the equal of any drummer I've played with and I am blessed to have played with some greats. He and Jamie are always in the pocket and his energy, enthusiasm and joy are infectious and manifest at every rehearsal and most especially at the gig. Jim Leonardis, whom I like to call 'Jimmy the Lion', is a very talented jazz tenor sax player who chose to settle in Lake County and I am delighted that he also chooses to play with me.

"My wife and I settled in Lake County first and foremost to be near our grandchildren and secondly because the clean air is better for my lung problems. My wife has been coming up to the lake since the '40s when her family vacationed here. It was a joy to find so many seasoned professional musicians here but I was disappointed to find that they're not really well supported by the locals despite all the lip service to 'buy local'. Most have to go out of the county to find decent paying gigs though I do commend Richard Persons of the Lake County Fair for his continuing support of Lake County musicians."

Asked why he doesn't tour more often, he answered, "My health prevents me from touring extensively and, although I do get out there now and then, I have been forced to turn down some major gigs." Lucky Lake County residents can hear him at their own county fair.

UPPER LAKE - Blues fans are in for a treat when Mike Wilhelm & Hired Guns welcome their special guest Mighty Mike Schermer to reprise his last performance with the band at the Blue Wing on Monday. It seemed that Wilhelm and Schermer had an instant rapport and easy interplay the first time they were paired enabling these seasoned blues guitar stylists to give a memorable performance which left the dancing audience exhausted but happy.

When Blue Wing proprietor Bernie Butcher learned that Schermer would be touring in northern California in November, he contacted Schermer to find out if he would be available on the 14th which indeed he was. Wilhelm was agreeable as well. Just announced is an appearance by a surprise guest vocalist who has starred at a past Blue Wing Blues Festival. Filling out the band will be Randy Hare, guitar/backup vocal; Slammin' Scott Slagle, drums/backup vocal; Jamie Webber, bass and James "Jimmy the Lion" Leonardis, tenor saxophone.

Show time is 6:00 to 9:00 pm, beginning with a short solo set by Wilhelm. The Blue Wing Saloon & Cafe is part of the historic Tallman Hotel complex. Reservations are recommended for parties of 6 or more. Telephone 707-275-2244. For further information go to www.bluewingsaloon.com. Mike Wilhelm's site is mike-wilhelm.com.
