Gqrx Ghost Box by Doug Harber
gqrx-ghostbox
A software defined radio tool for talking with the dead
by Doug Haber

Overview

[Source: https://github.com/DougHaber/gqrx-ghostbox ~ Local Source ]

This program makes it possible to use software defined radio (SDR) as a ghost box / electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) tool. A ghost box is a device sometimes used by paranormal researchers to talk to spirits, the dead, disembodied entities, shape shifting lizard people, and other intra-dimensional fauna.

Some ghost boxes have electronics that give them distinct properties, and others are effectively radio scanners. This tool is of the radio scanning style.

This utility controls the Gqrx SDR receiver program. Unlike more traditional ghost boxes, which are stand alone devices, this setup makes it easy to experiment with different options. Gqrx provides a live visualization of the spectrum and the ability to fine tune and control many parameters of the radio, such as gain, demodulation, squelch, and noise filtering. Ghost boxes usually scan AM or FM. By using SDR, we have a vastly larger spectrum available (though AM may require an upconverter, depending on which SDR is used.)

If we assume that the phenomena is a real thing, this style tool provides researchers with more options and controls than traditional ghost boxes at a lower cost. A cheap USB RTLSDR is enough to get started, and it is easy to experiment with different antenna configurations as well as radio and scanning parameters to figure out what is most effective.

If this tool works for you, please share any succesful results here.

Installation and Dependencies

In order to use this program you must have a software defined radio device. A $10 RTLSDR could work, as could more expensive and capable options. For people starting out, I recommend picking an R820T2 based USB stick. Many well reviewed options can be found on Amazon for between $10 and $25 dollars. (Note that these will not support tuning the AM spectrum without an upconverter.)

Traditional ghost boxes usually scan the AM radio spectrum. With this tool you can scan any range of the spectrum that your SDR supports. Unfortunately, the cheaper SDR devices, such as what was recommended above will not receive AM. To receive AM you will either need a more capable SDR device or another device known as an upconverter.

This program is written in Perl. The only dependency beyond a recent version of Perl is the GQRX::Remote module. This may be installed via the package on GitHub, or from CPAN. Here are some notes on installing CPAN modules.

Gqrx is required, and must be setup to allow remote connections from the host this program is running on. For some notes on settings that up, see the GQRX::Remote README and Gqrx's documentation. The Gqrx application itself officially runs on Linux, MacOS and Raspberry Pi. An unoffical version exists for Windows. For more information, see the Gqrx download page.

NOTE: SDR and Gqrx are not always trivial to work with and this is a command-line tool. A final dependency would be some level of comfort working with these types of things and a willingness to tinker. If you have not used SDR, Gqrx, and the command line before, do not expect it to work without some effort.

Usage

To use this program:

Begin by running Gqrx.

You must enable remote control via Tools->Remote control. Gqrx has to be setup to allow connections from the host this program is running on (localhost, or otherwise.) The configuration options are found under Tools->Remote control settings.

In a terminal, run the gqrx-ghostbox command with any desired options.

Modify any parameters in Gqrx as needed, such as the gain, squelch, and filtering.

Enter a deep trance state and begin your communion with the spirits.

Many examples of ghost box usage can be found on youtube. Generally, it involves asking questions and then listening for a response. Some people believe a medium or trance state is necessary in order for it to work. If you search for "ghost box" or "spirit box", you will find information on different usage styles.

Command Line Options

Usage: gqrx-ghostbox [OPTIONS]

GENERAL:
-h, --help Display this detailed help message
-q, --quiet Quiet mode - only output errors

CONNECTION:
-H, -- host={IP_ADDRESS} GQRX Host IP (default is 127.0.0.1)

Options: AM, CW, CWL, CWU, FM, LSB, USB, WFM, WFM_ST, WFM_ST_OIRT

SCANNING SETTINGS:
--min, --min-frequency={FREQUENCY} Minimum frequency to scan in KHz
(default is '88000', FM min)
--max, --max-frequency={FREQUENCY} Maximum frequency to scan in KHz
(default is '108000', FM max)
-m, --scanning-mode={MODE}

Method of scanning
(default is 'bounce')

Options: forward, backward, bounce, random

-s, --scanning-step={STEP_SIZE}

How many KHz to move when scanning (default is 150)

This has no effect in "random" mode

--S, --sleep={TIME} Time to hold a frequency for each step
in ms. (default is '30')

Usage Examples

# Run gqrx-ghostbox with the default parameters
$ gqrx-ghostbox

# Run against Gqrx on a remote server
$ gqrx-ghostbox --host=10.0.0.1 --port 1234

# Perform random scanning between 800mhz and 900mhz
$ gqrx-ghostbox --min=800000 --max=900000 --scanning-mode=random

Usage Notes

The speed of the scan is controlled by two options. The --sleep option determines how long in milliseconds the program waits after changing frequency. There is no timing loop. Instead, after an update cycles completes, the sleep is performed for the defined duration. The --scanning-step option tells how far the frequency is adjusted in KHz. Normal values would range between 50 and 500.

Scanning starts at a random point within the --min and --max frequency. When in bounce mode, the starting direction is also random.

The --scanning-mode supports 4 different options:

Mode
Description
forward Each step increase the current frequency by the --scanning-step size. When exceeding --max, start back at --min.
reverse Each step decrease the current frequency by the --scanning-step size. When exceeding --min, start back at --max.
bounce Start randomly in either forward or backward mode. When exceeding the --min or --max limit, switch to the opposite mode. (This is the default)
random Each step choose a new random frequency within the --min and --max range.

gqrx-ghostbox: A software defined radio tool for talking with the dead

submitted by DougHaber, Reddit Source

I wrote a tool that allows you to use SDR as a ghost box. A ghost box, or sometimes spirit box, is a tool used by paranormal researchers. The simpler ones are effectively radio scanners, so it seemed like a good fit for SDR around Halloween.

The tool controls a Gqrx instance via the remote control protocol. To make this possible, I wrote a Perl module named GQRX::Remote for providing a simple interface to the Gqrx remote control protocol.

Everything is open source. Here are the links:

Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. ... the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country. [Hermann Goring, Nuremberg trials, April 18, 1946]

We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing. [Konstantin Jireček]

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron. ... Is there no other way the world may live? [Dwight D. Eisenhower, The Chance for Peace, April 16,1953]

History teaches that war begins when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap. [Ronald Reagan]

War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength. [Big Brother, George Orwell]

The "Birthday Party" provided an easy cost-effective way to restore political balance:

None of the Above
should be a valid choice on voter ballots

Unfortunately, a jaded two party system rejects this simple fix because Nobody has all the answers and believes: If a majority of citizens voted for None of the Above, rather than lesser of evils, voters would have to find someone competent to lead them! The media said, "Nobody could argue with that logic."

Patriot Act Controversy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Ashcroft's War on Terrorists ~ A large eye is watching a couple in bed, who are trying to sleep.
John Ashcroft's [Republican/Democrat Supported] War on Terrorists
A large government eye watches a couple in bed, who are trying to sleep.

The USA PATRIOT Act has generated a great deal of controversy since its enactment.

Opponents of the Act have been quite vocal in asserting that it was passed opportunistically after the September 11 attacks, believing that there would have been little debate. They view the Act as one that was hurried through the Senate with little change before it was passed. (Senators Patrick Leahy and Russell Feingold proposed amendments to modify the final revision.)

The sheer magnitude of the Act itself was noted by Michael Moore in his controversial film Fahrenheit 9/11. In one of the scenes of the movie, he records Congressman Jim McDermott alleging that no Senator had read the bill and John Conyers, Jr. as saying, "We don't read most of the bills. Do you really know what that would entail if we read every bill that we passed?" Congressman Conyers then answers his own rhetorical question, asserting that if they did it would "slow down the legislative process". As a dramatic device, Moore then hired an ice-cream van and drove around Washington, D.C. with a loud speaker, reading out the Act to puzzled passers-by, which included a few Senators.

However, Moore was not the only commentator to notice that not many people had read the Act. When Dahlia Lithwick and Julia Turne for Slate asked, "How bad is PATRIOT, anyway?", they decided that it was "hard to tell" and stated:

The ACLU, in a new fact sheet challenging the DOJ Web site, wants you to believe that the act threatens our most basic civil liberties. Ashcroft and his roadies call the changes in law "modest and incremental." Since almost Nobody has read the legislation, much of what we think we know about it comes third-hand and spun. Both advocates and opponents are guilty of fear-mongering and distortion in some instances.

One prime example of a controversy of the Patriot Act is shown in the case of Susan Lindauer.

Another is the recent court case United States v. Antoine Jones. A nightclub owner was linked to a drug trafficking stash house via a law enforcement GPS tracking device attached to his car. It was placed there without a warrant, which caused a serious conviction obstacle for federal prosecutors in court. Through the years the case rose all the way to the United States Supreme Court where the conviction was overturned in favor of the defendant. The court found that increased monitoring of suspects caused by such legislation like the Patriot Act directly put the suspects' Constitutional rights in jeopardy.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has criticized the law as unconstitutional, especially when "the private communications of law-abiding American citizens might be intercepted incidentally" while the Electronic Frontier Foundation held that the lower standard applied to wiretaps "gives the FBI a 'blank check' to violate the communications privacy of countless innocent Americans". Others do not find the roving wiretap legislation to be as concerning. Professor David D. Cole of the Georgetown University Law Center, a critic of many of the provisions of the Act, found that though they come at a cost to privacy are a sensible measure while Paul Rosenzweig, a Senior Legal Research Fellow in the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation, argues that roving wiretaps are just a response to rapidly changing communication technology that is not necessarily fixed to a specific location or device.

The Act also allows access to voicemail through a search warrant rather than through a title III wiretap order. James Dempsey, of the CDT, believes that it unnecessarily overlooks the importance of notice under the Fourth Amendment and under a Title III wiretap, and the EFF criticizes the provision's lack of notice. However, the EFF's criticism is more extensive—they believe that the amendment "is in possible violation of the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution" because previously if the FBI listened to voicemail illegally, it could not use the messages in evidence against the defendant. Others disagree with these assessments. Professor Orin Kerr, of the George Washington University school of law, believes that the ECPA "adopted a rather strange rule to regulate voicemail stored with service providers" because "under ECPA, if the government knew that there was one copy of an unopened private message in a person's bedroom and another copy on their remotely stored voicemail, it was illegal for the FBI to simply obtain the voicemail; the law actually compelled the police to invade the home and rifle through peoples' bedrooms so as not to disturb the more private voicemail." In Professor Kerr's opinion, this made little sense and the amendment that was made by the USA PATRIOT Act was reasonable and sensible.

The USA PATRIOT Act's expansion of court jurisdiction to allow the nationwide service of search warrants proved controversial for the EFF. They believe that agencies will be able to "'shop' for judges that have demonstrated a strong bias toward law enforcement with regard to search warrants, using only those judges least likely to say no—even if the warrant doesn't satisfy the strict requirements of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution", and that it reduces the likelihood that smaller ISPs or phone companies will try to protect the privacy of their clients by challenging the warrant in court—their reasoning is that "a small San Francisco ISP served with such a warrant is unlikely to have the resources to appear before the New York court that issued it."They believe that this is bad because only the communications provider will be able to challenge the warrant as only they will know about it—many warrants are issued ex parte, which means that the target of the order is not present when the order is issued.

For a time, the USA PATRIOT Act allowed for agents to undertake "sneak and peek" searches. Critics such as EPIC and the ACLU strongly criticized the law for violating the Fourth Amendment, with the ACLU going so far as to release an advertisement condemning it and calling for it to be repealed.

After suspected abuses of the USA PATRIOT Act were brought to light in June 2013 with articles about collection of American call records by the NSA and the PRISM program (see 2013 mass surveillance disclosures), Representative Jim Sensenbrenner, Republican of Wisconsin, who introduced the Patriot Act in 2001, said that the National Security Agency overstepped its bounds. He released a statement saying “While I believe the Patriot Act appropriately balanced national security concerns and civil rights, I have always worried about potential abuses.” He added: Seizing phone records of millions of innocent people is excessive and un-American.

B Movie, Gil Scott-Heron from Alex Benson ~ https://vimeo.com/10139610

Well, the first thing I want to say is…"Mandate my ass!"

Because it seems as though we've been convinced that 26% of the registered voters, not even 26% of the American people, but 26% of the registered voters form a mandate – or a landslide. 21% voted for Skippy and 3, 4% voted for somebody else who might have been running.

But, oh yeah, I remember. In this year that we have now declared the year from Shogun to Reagan, I remember what I said about Reagan…meant it. Acted like an actor…Hollyweird. Acted like a liberal. Acted like General Franco when he acted like governor of California, then he acted like a republican. Then he acted like somebody was going to vote for him for president. And now we act like 26% of the registered voters is actually a mandate. We're all actors in this I suppose.

What has happened is that in the last 20 years, America has changed from a producer to a consumer. And all consumers know that when the producer names the tune…the consumer has got to dance. That's the way it is. We used to be a producer – very inflexible at that, and now we are consumers and, finding it difficult to understand. Natural resources and minerals will change your world. The Arabs used to be in the 3rd World. They have bought the 2nd World and put a firm down payment on the 1st one. Controlling your resources will control your world. This country has been surprised by the way the world looks now. They don't know if they want to be Matt Dillon or Bob Dylan. They don't know if they want to be diplomats or continue the same policy - of nuclear nightmare diplomacy. John Foster Dulles ain't nothing but the name of an airport now.

The idea concerns the fact that this country wants nostalgia. They want to go back as far as they can – even if it's only as far as last week. Not to face now or tomorrow, but to face backwards. And yesterday was the day of our cinema heroes riding to the rescue at the last possible moment. The day of the man in the white hat or the man on the white horse - or the man who always came to save America at the last moment – someone always came to save America at the last moment – especially in "B" movies. And when America found itself having a hard time facing the future, they looked for people like John Wayne. But since John Wayne was no longer available, they settled for Ronald Reagan – and it has placed us in a situation that we can only look at – like a "B" movie.

Come with us back to those inglorious days when heroes weren't zeros. Before fair was square. When the cavalry came straight away and all-American men were like Hemingway to the days of the wondrous "B" movie. The producer underwritten by all the millionaires necessary will be Casper "The Defensive" Weinberger – no more animated choice is available. The director will be Attila the Haig, running around frantically declaring himself in control and in charge. The ultimate realization of the inmates taking over at the asylum. The screenplay will be adapted from the book called "Voodoo Economics" by George "Papa Doc" Bush. Music by the "Village People" the very military "Macho Man."

"Company!!!"
"Macho, macho man!"
" Two-three-four."
" He likes to be – well, you get the point."
"Huuut! Your left! Your left! Your left…right, left, right, left, right…!"

A theme song for saber-rallying and selling wars door-to-door. Remember, we're looking for the closest thing we can find to John Wayne. Clichés abound like kangaroos – courtesy of some spaced out Marlin Perkins, a Reagan contemporary. Clichés like, "itchy trigger finger" and "tall in the saddle" and "riding off or on into the sunset." Clichés like, "Get off of my planet by sundown!" More so than clichés like, "he died with his boots on." Marine tough the man is. Bogart tough the man is. Cagney tough the man is. Hollywood tough the man is. Cheap steak tough. And Bonzo's substantial. The ultimate in synthetic selling: A Madison Avenue masterpiece – a miracle – a cotton-candy politician…Presto! Macho!

"Macho, macho man!"

Put your orders in America. And quick as Kodak your leaders duplicate with the accent being on the dupe - cause all of a sudden we have fallen prey to selective amnesia - remembering what we want to remember and forgetting what we choose to forget. All of a sudden, the man who called for a blood bath on our college campuses is supposed to be Dudley "God-damn" Do-Right?

"You go give them liberals hell Ronnie." That was the mandate. To the new "Captain Bly" on the new ship of fools. It was doubtlessly based on his chameleon performance of the past - as a liberal democrat – as the head of the Studio Actor's Guild. When other celluloid saviors were cringing in terror from McCarthy – Ron stood tall. It goes all the way back from Hollywood to hillbilly. From liberal to libelous, from "Bonzo" to Birch idol…born again. Civil rights, women's rights, gay rights…it's all wrong. Call in the cavalry to disrupt this perception of freedom gone wild. God damn it…first one wants freedom, then the whole damn world wants freedom.

Nostalgia, that's what we want…the good ol' days…when we gave'em hell. When the buck stopped somewhere and you could still buy something with it. To a time when movies were in black and white – and so was everything else. Even if we go back to the campaign trail, before six-gun Ron shot off his face and developed hoof-in-mouth. Before the free press went down before full-court press. And were reluctant to review the menu because they knew the only thing available was – Crow.

Lon Chaney, our man of a thousand faces - no match for Ron. Doug Henning does the make-up - special effects from Grecian Formula 16 and Crazy Glue. Transportation furnished by the David Rockefeller of Remote Control Company. Their slogan is, "Why wait for 1984? You can panic now...and avoid the rush."

So much for the good news…

As Wall Street goes, so goes the nation. And here's a look at the closing numbers – racism's up, human rights are down, peace is shaky, war items are hot - the House claims all ties. Jobs are down, money is scarce – and common sense is at an all-time low with heavy trading. Movies were looking better than ever and now no one is looking because, we're starring in a "B" movie. And we would rather have John Wayne…we would rather have John Wayne.

"You don't need to be in no hurry. - You ain't never really got to worry. - And you don't need to check on how you feel. - Just keep repeating that none of this is real. - And if you're sensing, that something's wrong, - Well just remember, that it won't be too long - Before the director cuts the scene…yea."

"This ain't really your life, - Ain't really your life, - Ain't really ain't nothing but a movie."

[Refrain repeated about 25 times or more in an apocalyptic crescendo with a military cadence.]

"This ain't really your life, - Ain't really your life, - Ain't really ain't nothing but a movie."

Sacred Clowns
From Word Worlds, Where simplifying complexity becomes art.

The Heyókȟa symbolize and portray many aspects of the sacred, the Wakȟáŋ. Their satire presents important questions by fooling around. They ask difficult questions, and say things others are too afraid to say. By reading between the lines, the audience is able to think about things not usually thought about, or to look at things in a different way.

Principally, the Heyókȟa functions both as a mirror and a teacher, using extreme behaviors to mirror others, thereby forcing them to examine their own doubts, fears, hatreds, and weaknesses. Heyókȟas also have the power to heal emotional pain; such power comes from the experience of shame--they sing of shameful events in their lives, beg for food, and live as clowns. They provoke laughter in distressing situations of despair and provoke fear and chaos when people feel complacent and overly secure, to keep them from taking themselves too seriously or believing they are more powerful than they are.

In addition, sacred clowns serve an important role in shaping tribal codes. Heyókȟa's don't seem to care about taboos, rules, regulations, social norms, or boundaries. Paradoxically, however, it is by violating these norms and taboos that they help to define the accepted boundaries, rules, and societal guidelines for ethical and moral behavior. This is because they are the only ones who can ask "Why?" about sensitive topics and employ satire to question the specialists and carriers of sacred knowledge or those in positions of power and authority. In doing so, they demonstrate concretely the theories of balance and imbalance. Their role is to penetrate deception, turn over rocks, and create a deeper awareness.

Freedom of expression and freedom of speech aren't really important unless they're heard...It's hard for me to stay silent when I keep hearing that peace is only attainable through war. And there's nothing more scary than watching ignorance in action. So I dedicated this Emmy to all the people who feel compelled to speak out and not afraid to speak to power and won't shut up and refuse to be silenced. ~ Tom Smothers

There’s a battle raging on the sacred land ≈ Our brothers and sisters have to take a stand ≈ Against us now for what we all been doing ≈ On the sacred land there’s a battle brewing ≈ I wish somebody would share the news ≈ Now it’s been about 500 years ≈ We keep taking what we gave away ≈ Just like what we call Indian givers ≈ It makes you sick and gives you shivers ≈ I wish somebody would share the news ≈ Big money going backwards and ripping the soil ≈ Where graves are scattered and blood was boiled ≈ When all who look can see the truth ≈ But they just move on and keep their groove ≈ I wish somebody would share the news ≈ Saw Happy locked to the big machine ≈ They had to cut him loose and you know what that means ≈ That’s when Happy went to jail ≈ Behind big money justice always fails ≈ I wish somebody would share the news ≈ Bring back the days when good was good ≈ Lose these imposters in our neighborhood ≈ Across our farms and through our waters ≈ All at the cost of our sons and daughters ≈ Our brave songs and daughters ≈ We're all here together fighting poison waters ≈ Standing against the evil way ≈ That’s what we have at the end of day ≈ I wish somebody would share the news

STOP the Dakota Access Pipeline #NoDAPL
Source: http://thefreethoughtproject.com/10-protest-dakota-access-pipeline/

Cannon Ball, ND – While many Americans passively support the Standing Rock Sioux’s fight to stop the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, aside from showing up in Cannon Ball, North Dakota (which many simply can’t do) – to actively participate in the protests – most people are unsure of what they can actually do to support the Sioux at Standing Rock aside from posting on social media.

Here is a list of ten things that people can do to show their support. Some methods may be more effective than others, but the key is utilizing multiple avenues of resistance in an effort to provide full spectrum resistance against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

1. Call North Dakota governor Jack Dalrymple at 701-328-2200. When leaving a message stating your thoughts about this subject please be professional.

2. Sign the petition to the White House to Stop DAPL: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/…/stop-construction…

3. Donate to support the Standing Rock Sioux at http://standingrock.org/…/standing-rock-sioux-tribe…/

4. Donate items from the Sacred Stone Camp Supply List: http://sacredstonecamp.org/supply-list/

5. Call the White House at (202) 456-1111 or (202) 456-1414. Tell President Obama to rescind the Army Corps of Engineers’ Permit for the Dakota Access Pipeline.

6. Contribute to the Sacred Stone Camp Legal Defense Fund: https://fundrazr.com/d19fAf

7. Contribute to the Sacred Stone Camp gofundme account: https://www.gofundme.com/sacredstonecamp

8. Call the Army Corps of Engineers and demand that they reverse the permit: (202) 761-5903

9. Sign other petitions asking President Obama to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline. Here’s the latest to cross my desk: https://act.credoaction.com/sign/NoDAPL

10. Call the executives of the companies that are building the pipeline:

a. Lee Hanse Executive Vice President Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. 800 E Sonterra Blvd #400 San Antonio, Texas 78258 Telephone: (210) 403-6455 Lee.Hanse@energytransfer.com

b. Glenn Emery Vice President Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. 800 E Sonterra Blvd #400 San Antonio, Texas 78258 Telephone: (210) 403-6762 Glenn.Emery@energytransfer.com

c. Michael (Cliff) Waters Lead Analyst Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. 1300 Main St. Houston, Texas 77002 Telephone: (713) 989-2404 Michael.Waters@energytransfer.com

The most effective means of showing support for this cause is to actively participate in protecting this sacred land. Anyone who is able to travel to the peaceful encampments is encouraged to do so. For those unable to make the journey to North Dakota, please utilize the alternate methods provided to show your support for the Standing Rock Sioux who have united over 100 tribes from across the U.S. Please join this effort to stop this pipeline, which desecrates sacred lands and has serious potential to damage or destroy the Standing Rock reservations lifeblood – its water.

A Tribute to Dr. Strange

A Trbute to Dr. Strange, October 16, 1965 Poster

In October 1965, a small commune called the Family Dog threw an unusual dance at Longshoreman's Hall, starring a rock band called the Charlatans that had played the previous summer at the Red Dog Saloon, a restored silver rush dance hall in Virginia City, Nev. The second-billed group, which had an even weirder name, Jefferson Airplane, was making its first appearance outside the Marina District nightclub it had opened the month before. The third act on the bill, the Great Society, featured a former model from Palo Alto named Grace Slick.

More than a thousand people turned up for the dance. Hair flowing over their collars, the revelers were dressed cheerfully in colorful discards plucked from thrift stores. Many were on LSD, as were many of the musicians. Virtually everyone who attended "A Tribute to Dr. Strange," as the dance was called, seemed to have the same thought about the gathering: "I didn't know there were this many of us."

The other development that helped form the Haight's early temperament took place at a Western-style dance hall, the Red Dog Saloon, in the ghost town of Virginia City, Nevada. In June 1965, a San Francisco band, the Charlatans, took up residency at the saloon. Their easygoing attitude and meandering performances--as they played sometimes under LSD's influence for an audience also sometimes under LSD's influence--set another model for psychedelic gatherings, one less tense and sardonic than Kesey's.

In San Francisco in October 1965, some Red Dog veterans, now calling themselves the Family Dog, staged an evening of bands and dancing at the Longshoremen's Hall; billed as 'A Tribute to Dr. Strange,' it featured the Charlatans, Jefferson Airplane and the Great Society. The event spontaneously fused the lenient spirit of the Acid Tests with the Red Dog's focus on dancing and proved a pivotal occasion in the psychedelic scene's history. Over the next two years, San Francisco dance ballrooms--primarily the Avalon and the Fillmore--became not merely a central metaphor for Haight-Ashbury's reinvention of community but also a fundamental enactment of it.

Editorial: Yahoo story reinforces
need for online user bill of rights

By MERCURY NEWS EDITORIAL BOARD
PUBLISHED: October 7, 2016 | UPDATED: October 8, 2016 ~ Mercury News Source

The Reuters report that Yahoo scanned hundreds of millions of customers’ emails for information requested by U.S. intelligence officials screams out — once again — the need for an online users’ bill of rights.

We will say it for the umpteenth time: The United States, home of Silicon Valley, remains the only major developed nation without fundamental online user protections, and that is appalling. Congress has to establish clear privacy protection of personal data, both from unwarranted government intrusion and from tech companies’ widespread sharing of personal data for profit.

Two weeks ago, Yahoo announced that hackers had stolen the credentials of 500 million users. Now Reuters says the company complied with a federal government request to allow a mass scanning of email for a specific string to uncover possible wrongdoing.

This government demand would mark a major, troubling departure. Usually requests have a particular target and are based on findings of probable cause.

Consumer trust in tech products is essential to the continued success of the industry that drives the U.S. economy — and mistrust grows with each massive hack and government fishing expedition. Polling today shows American trust in U.S. technology is strong, but it can quickly erode with more revelations like the Yahoo reports.

President Obama tried twice, in 2012 and 2015, to introduce a Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights, but each time tech companies argued that it would stifle innovation. That’s the politically acceptable buzzword. They also fear their profits will be affected if they can’t monetize customers’ private data at will.

Things could be worse for the industry. Imagine the Supreme Court settling online privacy issues on a case-by-case basis based on laws written in the Dark Ages — and the average age of the justices is 75. Most say they don’t even use email, let alone smartphones or Snapchat.

Federal law limits how much tech companies can reveal about Federal Bureau of Investigation and National Security Agency requests. Hence, Yahoo’s lame initial response to the Reuters report: “Yahoo is a law-abiding company, and complies with the laws of the United States.”

Later Yahoo added, “The (Reuters) article is misleading. We narrowly interpret every government request for user data to minimize disclosure. The mail scanning described in the article does not exist in our systems.”

Reuters is standing by its story.

The Yahoo report and the Apple-vs.-FBI fight last fall build the case that further delays in consumer protection will hurt the industry as well as consumers. If user trust in Silicon Valley crumbles, customers will look for products and security systems from other countries.

Business concerns aside, here’s a radical thought. Basic privacy protection of personal information should be a fundamental right of Americans. Can’t we just get it done?

Remembering Obscure Computer History

Once upon a time, a group of bright, responsible computer professionals, under an illusion computers could be used as a tool for educational enlightenment, realized most data was not safe and offered the powers that be a complete security encryption upgrade, with full source code, for free, because they felt it was their civic duty and right thing to do.

In turn, the powers that be rejected this upgrade and told these responsible computer professionals, "If you use or distribute this encryption code, we will tell the public you are criminals, hunt you down, and arrest you."

This response left most of these professionals scratching their heads because they did not understand why the powers that be would refuse a free offer to ultimately protect end users; however, after thirty-five plus years, it is now becoming obvious, and here is one of many articles that may indicate a reason:

"The government's cyberterrorism 'concerns' are a pretext for their own hacking operations. Invoking the threat of terrorism is the most common mechanism used to deny citizens both due process and free speech in the 21st century."

Integrity ~ From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Integrity is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. In ethics, integrity is regarded as the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one's actions. Integrity can be regarded as the opposite of hypocrisy, in that integrity regards internal consistency as a virtue, and suggests that parties holding apparently conflicting values should account for the discrepancy or alter their beliefs.

Hypocrisy ~ From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hypocrisy is the state of pretending to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that one does not actually have. Hypocrisy involves the deception of others and is thus a kind of lie.

SELinux Background ~ Researchers in the National Information Assurance Research Laboratory of the National Security Agency (NSA) worked with Secure Computing Corporation (SCC) to develop a strong, flexible mandatory access control architecture based on Type Enforcement, a mechanism first developed for the LOCK system. The NSA and SCC developed two Mach-based prototypes of the architecture: DTMach and DTOS. The NSA and SCC then worked with the University of Utah's Flux research group to transfer the architecture to the Fluke research operating system. During this transfer, the architecture was enhanced to provide better support for dynamic security policies. This enhanced architecture was named Flask. The NSA integrated the Flask architecture into the GNU/Linux® operating system to transfer the technology to a larger developer and user community. The architecture has been subsequently mainstreamed into GNU/Linux® and ported to several other systems, including the Solaris™ (Sun Microsystems/Oracle) operating system, the freeBSD® operating system, and the Darwin (Apple) kernel, spawning a wide range of related work. ~ Source

NSA general counsel Rajesh De contradicts months of angry denials from big companies like Yahoo, Apple, Google, AOL, Microsoft, and Facebook

The senior lawyer for the National Security Agency stated unequivocally on Wednesday that US technology companies were fully aware of the surveillance agency’s widespread collection of data, contradicting months of angry denials from the firms.

Rajesh De, the NSA general counsel, said all communications content and associated metadata harvested by the NSA under a 2008 surveillance law occurred with the knowledge of the companies – both for the internet collection program known as Prism and for the so-called “upstream” collection of communications moving across the internet.

Asked during a Wednesday hearing of the US government’s institutional privacy watchdog if collection under the law, known as Section 702 or the Fisa Amendments Act, occurred with the “full knowledge and assistance of any company from which information is obtained,” De replied: “Yes.”

When the Guardian and the Washington Post broke the Prism story in June, thanks to documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden, nearly all the companies listed as participating in the program – Yahoo, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and AOL – claimed they did not know about a surveillance practice described as giving NSA vast access to their customers’ data. Some, like Apple, said they had “never heard” the term Prism.

De explained: “Prism was an internal government term that as the result of leaks became the public term,” De said. “Collection under this program was a compulsory legal process, that any recipient company would receive.

After the hearing, De said that the same knowledge, and associated legal processes, also apply when the NSA harvests communications data not from companies directly but in transit across the internet, under Section 702 authority.

The disclosure of Prism resulted in a cataclysm in technology circles, with tech giants launching extensive PR campaigns to reassure their customers of data security and successfully pressing the Obama administration to allow them greater leeway to disclose the volume and type of data requests served to them by the government.

Last week, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said he had called US president Barack Obama to voice concern about “the damage the government is creating for all our future.” There was no immediate response from the tech companies to De’s comments on Wednesday.

It is unclear what sort of legal process the government serves on a company to compel communications content and metadata access under Prism or through upstream collection. Documents leaked from Snowden indicate that the NSA possesses unmediated access to the company data. The secret Fisa court overseeing US surveillance for the purposes of producing foreign intelligence issues annual authorisations blessing NSA’s targeting and associated procedures under Section 702.

Passed in 2008, Section 702 retroactively gave cover of law to a post-9/11 effort permitting the NSA to collect phone, email, internet and other communications content when one party to the communication is reasonably believed to be a non-American outside the United States. The NSA stores Prism data for five years and communications taken directly from the internet for two years.

While Section 702 forbids the intentional targeting of Americans or people inside the United States – a practice known as “reverse targeting” – significant amounts of Americans’ phone calls and emails are swept up in the process of collection.

In 2011, according to a now-declassified Fisa court ruling, the NSA was found to have collected tens of thousands of emails between Americans, which a judge on the court considered a violation of the US constitution and which the NSA says it is technologically incapable of fixing.

Renewed in December 2012 over the objections of senate intelligence committee members Ron Wyden and Mark Udall, Section 702 also permits NSA analysts to search through the collected communications for identifying information about Americans, an amendment to so-called “minimisation” rules revealed by the Guardian in August and termed the “backdoor search loophole” by Wyden.

De and his administration colleagues, testifying before the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, strongly rejected suggestions by the panel that a court authorise searches for Americans’ information inside the 702 databases. “If you have to go back to court every time you look at the information in your custody, you can imagine that would be quite burdensome,” deputy assistant attorney general Brad Wiegmann told the board.

De argued that once the Fisa court permits the collection annually, analysts ought to be free to comb through it, and stated that there were sufficient privacy safeguards for Americans after collection and querying had occurred. “That information is at the government’s disposal to review in the first instance,” De said.

De also stated that the NSA is not permitted to search for Americans’ data from communications taken directly off the internet, citing greater risks to privacy.

Neither De nor any other US official discussed data taken from the internet under different legal authorities. Different documents Snowden disclosed, published by the Washington Post, indicated that NSA takes data as it transits between Yahoo and Google data centers, an activity reportedly conducted not under Section 702 but under a seminal executive order known as 12333.

The NSA’s Wednesday comments contradicting the tech companies about the firms’ knowledge of Prism risk entrenching tensions with the firms NSA relies on for an effort that Robert Litt, general counsel for the director of national intelligence, told the board was “one of the most valuable collection tools that we have.”

“All 702 collection is pursuant to court directives, so they have to know,” De reiterated to the Guardian. Read more at Telecom Crimes & Punishment

Yahoo slammed over privacy
after reports of mass email scanning

By ETHAN BARON | ebaron@bayareanewsgroup.com
PUBLISHED: October 5, 2016 ~ Mercury News Source

In the wake of a second explosive report alleging that Yahoo scanned users’ emails for a federal agency, critics are attacking the company’s stewardship of customers’ private information.

And a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, a think tank, warns that software Yahoo reportedly created for the real-time scanning could be used to sweep up the private communications of innocent users.

On Tuesday, Reuters reported that Yahoo secretly scanned users’ incoming email in real time to comply with a demand from the federal government. Yahoo on Wednesday issued a cryptic denial, calling the Reuters story, which was based on anonymous sources, “misleading.”

“The mail scanning described in the article does not exist on our systems,” Yahoo said in the statement.

Later on Wednesday, the New York Times published a report alleging Yahoo had been scanning users’ emails and giving the FBI copies of messages containing the digital “signature” or fingerprint associated with communications from a state-sponsored terrorist group. Yahoo, in scanning emails for the FBI, had complied with an order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the Times reported.

For the scanning, Yahoo created software by modifying existing programs that identify child pornography, spam and malware, according to the Times, which based its report on anonymous comments from a government official and people familiar with the matter. The data collection has ceased, the official said.

The Times report indicated that Sunnyvale-based Yahoo had been ordered to search for “code uniquely used by the foreign terrorist organization” rather than the signature of software also used by others.

But Julian Sanchez, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, a think tank, said just because authorities say they believe the code is uniquely used by one group doesn’t mean it is.

“How would you know until you do your scan and realize, ‘Oops, the fingerprint we thought was unique is turning up in a lot of places — we didn’t know because we weren’t spying on those other places because those users aren’t terrorists,'” Sanchez said. “Most software is used by good people and bad people.”

Commonly, the digital fingerprint or signature that authorities look for is related to privacy-protection software that may be used by criminals, terrorists and other bad actors — but may also be used by innocent people, Sanchez said.

“It is disturbing to think that the court has now accepted the idea that there is inherently suspicious software, and inherently suspicious privacy software, and that all you need to do to get your communications scooped up by a spy agency is to use the same kind of software.”

And using a mass-scanning software architecture to comply with a government order creates a slippery slope for citizens’ privacy, Sanchez said.

“(The government is) saying, ‘We want to look at everyone’s content so we can find out who’s suspicious,'” Sanchez said. “That architecture can be used for a lot of different ideas about what’s suspicious.”

Coming after the news two weeks ago that it took almost two years for Yahoo to discover that hackers had stolen personal data from at least 500 million users, reports of mass email scanning by the firm drew further criticism of its treatment of users’ personal data and communications.

“People just have to be more aware that your information may or may not be private, depending on the executives within an organization and their commitment to protecting your privacy,” said Michael Lipinski, chief security analyst at digital-security firm Securonix.

The reports suggest Yahoo gave in to the order without a fight, and if that is the case, it “just shows where (Yahoo executives’) heads are as far as their concern for people’s privacy, Lipinski said.

In challenging the order, Yahoo probably would have lost because most companies do, but it still should have fought back, said Dimitri Sirota, CEO of data-protection firm BigID. “Optics matter, and I think the optics around this are that you don’t feel strongly enough about the privacy of your customers,” Sirota said.

Meanwhile, the head of the U.S. Cyber Command said that a “blanket look at all emails” held by a company such as Yahoo would be “illegal.”

“No court would ever grant us the authority to do that,” Admiral Michael Rogers said at The Cambridge Cyber Summit hosted by The Aspen Institute, CNBC and MIT.

Nobody for President 2016

Operation Northwoods .. Gulf of Tonkin .. Iraqi WMD .. yada

NONE of the ABOVE should be a choice on Voter Ballots ~ Nobody for President

The "Birthday Party" provided an easy cost-effective way to restore political balance:

None of theAbove
should be a valid choice on voter ballots

Unfortunately, a jaded two party system rejects this simple fix because Nobody has all the answers and believes:

If a majority of citizens voted for None of the Above, rather than lesser of evils, voters would have to find someone competent to lead them !!!

The media said, "Nobody could argue with that logic."

Cree Prophecy

Only after the last tree has been cut down,

Only after the last river has been poisoned,

Only after the last fish has been caught,

Only then will you find money cannot be eaten.

STOP the Dakota Access Pipeline #NoDAPL

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. ~ John Lennon

Artist, John Flores

The man whispered, "God, speak to me" and a meadowlark sang. But the man did not hear. So the man yelled "God, speak to me" and the thunder rolled across the sky. But the man did not listen. The man looked around and said, "God let me see you" and a star shined brightly. But the man did not notice. And the man shouted, "God show me a miracle" and a life was born. But the man did not know. So the man cried out in despair, "Touch me God, and let me know you are there" Whereupon God reached down and touched the man. But the man brushed the butterfly away and walked on.
